ReproductionCane toads can breed at any time of the year. Cane toads return to the water to breed. Female cane toads that are over one year old, can lay large amounts of black eggs twice in one year. This process starts as the male toad climbs on the back of the female and holds her while in the water. This is called amplexus. Cane toads can produce up to 30 000 eggs in a single clutch, which the male toad fertilises in the water.
The tadpoles develop into small toads after a month.(1-2 cm) Cane toads are poisonous throughout their whole life cycle, when they are eggs, tadpoles, metamorphs and adults. |
